Shoal Bay, East Thurlow Island

We're making plans to head south through the Dent and Yuculta Rapids tomorrow for Desolation Sound in search of warmer water and summer weather.  It's disappointing.  But there really is not point in heading north only to be miserable, cold and wet.  And the thought of doing it two seasons in a row, is too much.

We spent a quiet afternoon aboard cleaning, putting things away and trying to come up with a destination.  We have a little more than a week's worth of provisions left, so eventually we'll need to be close to Campbell River but, until then, we might be able to squeeze in some fresh-water swimming at Cassel or Black Lake on West Redonda Island.

Around 4:30 pm, we went up to the pub for our last happy hour for a while.  The roofers were already done for the day.  It had been a hot one (80º F in the shade).  They only have two more hours to put in and will be ready to leave tomorrow afternoon when the water taxi makes its rounds.

With the fine weather and a sociable group, it wasn't long before the deck at the pub filled up, including a couple who recently lived in Salina, Kansas.  They got a real surprise when they saw my WSU tee-shirt, their alma mater as well.  I wish I could tell you how many times that has happened, even in New Zealand.  It's gotten to the point that I now own eleven WSU shirts (which is a lot on a boat) and am rarely seen without one on...just in case.

Now that the weather's better here, the thought of leaving makes me sad but we can't stay the whole summer, even if we wanted to.  There areso many other places to discover and fall in love with.  I was happy to be here when we first arrived.  Ready to leave when it was raining. And sad to go now that it's time.
