For the first time, we left Pender Harbour the day after the festival but not before most of the other 30 or 40 boats that were anchored here.
Only going as far as Ballet Bay and with a small tidal change to be concerned about, we took our time getting ready to leave Pender Harbour and upped anchor around noon. The forecast was for southeastelies which would have given us a nice sail, but they didn't come through. Instead we saw 5 to 10 knot northwesterlies – right on our nose. But all wasn't lost because, even though it's sunny, the batteries needed to be charged. Between the frig, heater, and everything else, we were close to 100 amp hours down this morning....ah, welcome to fall cruising!
There are three boats anchored in Ballet Bay – all from Pender Harbour– which came as a bit of a surprise with the forecast because we didn't expect to see else anybody moving north. Today and tomorrow will be okay, but a large low is moving south from Alaska and will bring 50 knot winds to Johnstone Strait. We shouldn't feel the brunt of the storm in Desolation Sound, but we'll see how it goes on Friday. One thing's for sure, we'll be tucked in. Although we didn't find much reason to linger in Grace Harbour during our first visit, we will this week --namely the first major storm of the season.
