What a difference a day makes! Yesterday we spent the entire time locked up in the boat with the heater running as it rained through the day. Today, the sun shone and we could get back to our favourite activities – kayaking, enjoying the view and watching the solar panels do their magic.
With the kayaks aired up, we took to the water in the afternoon and floated around the basin for hours. There's still a lot of snow and the winter melt has produced more waterfalls than the autumn rains possibly could. It was amazing and went a long way to improve both of our moods, which are fairly anti-social at this stage. But more than that, it was quiet. The only sounds came from the falls themselves or curious seals poking their heads through the water to see who's in their neighbourhood.
Ming, the ranger, is here and has been busy cleaning things up after the difficult winter – blazing trails with a weed wacker, replacing rotten boards along the dock, and power washing the lodge. Sally seems to make an impression wherever we go and, out of the thousands of people who visit Chatterbox Falls each season, she remembered us thanks to her...I'm not sure if that's a good thing or not, but it does make a person feel at home.
It's been busy along the dock with boats coming and going, but we continue to keep to ourselves and have quiet evenings aboard rather than sitting outside to socialize – of course, the rain hasn't helped. And, after only one day of improvement, another change in the weather is on its way; the barometer fell to 1009 MB and is showing showers. David spoke to the driver of a tour boat who came in this afternoon and Environment Canada is calling for bad weather until Tuesday, so we'll likely stick around until then.
