After a few days in Reid Harbor, we decided it was time for a change and travelled fifteen nautical miles to the west over to Sucia Island. Our first attempt was Fossil Bay which was already full of boats so we motored over to Echo Bay, the largest of the island, where we had our choice of spots. And for good reason, it’s a rolly anchorage with easterly exposure. But they all are.
It’s difficult to believe that we left a perfectly good anchorage like Reid Harbor in favour of one at Sucia, but we did. If you believe what the cruising guides have to say, this is the gem of the San Juans with interesting limestone rock formations. A must-see. The end-all-be-all. Like coming home. And I just knew we had to experience it for ourselves or our trip to the San Juan Islands would never be complete. But at first glance, it doesn’t appear to live up to its reputation.
We’ll just have to wai tand see what tomorrow brings . . . .
