Cambria at anchor in Wahkana Bay.
A trough is moving through the are from the north bringing cold winds, so we left Kwatsi Bay this morning for Wahkana Bay on Gilford Island, the largest of the Broughton Archipelago, in search of better protection and a change of scenery.
As we left the bay and entered Tribune Channel, we saw 15 to 20 knots of wind from the northwest – normally a good sailing breeze but here the wind accelerates down the hilltops and twists through the contours of the land creating a short chop on the water. If we've learned one thing in our travels along the Inside Passage, it's that it doesn't take much wind to liven up its deep water.
Wahkana Bay is a well-protected, land-locked anchorage with dark granite outcroppings on its high, steep ridges. To stay here, you have to be comfortable anchoring in deep water, 18 metres (nearly 60 feet), which may explain why there are only two boats here tonight making for a very quiet and beautiful bay – no marinas, no inhabitants and just our speed.
