Cambria in Bond Sound.
We woke up to a beautiful morning and a rising barometer, so we upped-anchor and made way for Bond Sound, another scenic mainland inlet along Tribune Channel. For the adventurous, the real treat would be a dinghy ride up the Ahta River at the head of the inlet which has undergone extensive cleaning and rejuvenating for salmon stock and supports several species of mammals including bear (black and grizzly). But there isn't a proper anchorage in the sound and the afternoon breeze was beginning to freshen, so we opted to float around for a while and just enjoy the view.
Eventually we moved on to Thompson Sound, yet another beautiful mainland inlet off Tribune Channel. At high tide, you can explore the river by dinghy giving you a real feel for the remote wilderness of the sound but, once again, we found ourselves without a decent anchorage and decided it was best to keep a person aboard at all times, so we settled for a quick trip along the shore in the dinghy to get a better look at the old steam donkey and logging equipment lying rusting along the head of the beach.
It was getting late in the afternoon, so we decided to go back to Wahkana Bay rather than move on to our next destination. As we approached the opening to the bay, we were welcomed back by a small pod of acrobatic dolphins jumping straight up into the air – proof that one should always have the camera ready! By the time I had it out of the case, they were gone.
