We had an amazing time in Coon Bay with Jeff and Karry. They're an incredible couple and went above and beyond the call of duty to make us feel welcome. While we were there, we had the opportunity to visit some of the places in the area that we'd only seen from the water - Point No Point Lighthouse and Port Gamble - but more importantly, to enjoy their company. It was a relaxing three days, and a wonderful way to begin our cruising season.
We left Wednesday afternoon with the tide and continued north to Port Townsend, our jumping off point to the San Juan Islands. There's an old saying that goes something like this: "the definition of cruising is travelling to exotic ports to fix your boat." While Port Townsend wouldn't be considered exotic by any stretch of the imagination, we have sailed here only to discover that we need more parts for the watermaker. Due to poor design and the carelessness of someone who came before us, there's a crack on one of the filter canister caps which can't be repaired and is leaking water all over the place. David was able to source a new set at a local chandlery along with new mounting brackets, but they won't arrive until Tuesday afternoon. Needless to say, he's beyond frustrated with what should have been a relatively simple commissioning process and has since turned into a complicated rebuilding and reengineering one.
On the whole, Port Townsend's been a disappointing stop for us this time around and we're not in the right frame of mind to enjoy ourselves, so it's time for a change. The wind picked up yesterday afternoon and is forecasted to do the same today, so we decided to move a few miles over into Kilisut Harbor, the Klallam Indian name for "protected waters", to wait for the canisters. We should have better protection there, and it'll be a lot quieter.
On a more positive note, Chris went back to work on Monday and, although tired, is doing remarkably well.
