It was much milder temperature-wise last night (a balmy 41°F) but the day was warmer as well which was beginning to stress out Sally who had sought refuge in the truck and refused to leave (she hates camping). I had hoped to do some hiking in Dog Canyon, but we needed to get to cooler ground so we took a drive up to Lincoln National Forest (home of Smokey the Bear) in the Sacramento Mountains and the National Solar Observatory which, as it turns out, was closed. We were still able to walk around the grounds and see two of the telescopes in action as well as take in a phenomenal view of the Tularosa Basin, including White Sands National Monument, getting back to the campsite around four when things were beginning to cool down and we could enjoy the evening.
