Living Aboard a Boat
The Central Coast
A (Very Good) Day in the Life
Wednesday, November 19, 2014TheCambrians
Over the last 15 years, David and I have had our fair
share of exceptional days on the
water, too many to mention in fact. But we both agree that the day we
discovered the western beach on Fury Island in British Columbia ’s Central Coast ranks high
on the list of bests.
It
started with the promise of a beautiful white midden beach on the west side of Fury Island and a need to explore . . .
. . . followed by the need
to be silly . . .
. . . and swing in the
breeze.
But the greatest need of
all, was to take it all in.

Not sure of definitions? What is a midden beach? Or rather, what makes this a midden beach and how would I recognize one?

A midden is an ancient waste dump where things like harvested shellfish were thrown out and, over thousands of years, have been broken down by the elements. Not all shell beaches are middens, though, and the best way to recognize one is if the area you're in is the ancestral land of the First Nations. In the case of Fury Cove, the continue to Owikeeno use the area to gather shellfish.
