We may not have decided exactly where we’re going this season, but our journey had to begin somewhere and with
an initial step. We took ours a couple of weeks ago when we dropped our lines
for the first time in six months, leaving Kingston
We
didn’t go far, only 20 miles north to Port Ludlow, but it was a world apart
from life in the marina. And, swinging free at anchor, I slept better than I
had for months. It was short-lived, however, and we upped anchor the next
morning so that David could drop me off at the dock and I could catch the bus
down to Poulsbo and back up again to Kingston

few days turned into a week and I have to admit that I was a little surprised
to see the date when we made our next move – May 10. How did so many days pass
so quickly and without a lot to show for it? I’ll never know. But it’s a side
effect of this lifestyle, one that I’m willing to accept without too much
thought.
We
left Tuesday morning with the tide, bashing our way up Admiralty Inlet with 10 to 15 knots on the nose. By the time we
reached the Strait of Juan
de Fuca , the wind was
sitting 45° off our bow but had died to less than six knots. We threw out the
jib anyway to gain an extra knot of speed and motor-sailed the rest of the way.
By 4:30
pm , we were tied to the
yacht club dock in West Sound, Orcas Island
It’s
time to get moving again. Cambria ’s a foreign-flagged vessel and is in the U.S. Canada
