I-90 Roadtrip

With all of our chores finally completed, we loaded up the truck and left Washington early Saturday morning. Able to take advantage of the last of a large high sitting over the top of the US, we opted to drive the most northerly route along I-90. It would have been nice to have lingered; there's so much more to see and do in the area from Yosemite Park to the Grand Tetons to Devil's Tower, but the high was collapsing and we needed to move quickly in order to make it to Wichita so we kept our side-trips down to The Battle of Little Bighorn (Custer's Last Stand)and Mount Rushmore, both stops along the way.
There's no denying that scultping the heads of four presidents into a granite mountain was an amazing feat, but once we moved past that fact we were left with only one question … why? Neither one of us could come up with a good answer and walked away glad that we were in the area and stopped, but that's about it. That's not to say that we didn't enjoy our short time there, we did. It's just that now that we've been there, done that, and didn't buy the tee-shirt, there's little reason to return.
With thirty hours of driving and more than 1900 miles behind us, we arrived late last night, just hours ahead of a winter storm which was already impacting the area we had travelled through, and called it a night. It's good to be off the road and settling back into life in Wichita where we'll stay for the next two months. After all, to quote an over-used line from Kansas's most famous character, “there's no place like home.”
