Shoal Bay, East Thurlow Island

We left Forward Harbour early yesterday morning to time our passage through Whirlpool and Green Point Rapids arriving in Shoal Bay by ten o’clock. A boat was already anchored in the area we wanted to drop our hook, so we moved over to our usual spot which was littered with crab pots and had to drop a little farther back than usual. We couldn’t get a good set (not only does the bay shoal quickly, but it reaches depths of 20 – 30 metres just as fast). The windlass wasn’t able to bring up the anchor on its own, so we made the decision to tie up to the dock rather than try again – I guess there really is a first time for everything.
So rather than using the afternoon to rest up after three very busy days, David tore down the windlass again in search of anything he might have overlooked the previous two times while I cleaned the boat. But we did take a break long enough to go up to the pub for “Happy Hour” to visit with Mark, Cynthia and other boaters before falling into bed, exhausted.
We’d planned to stick around Shoal Bay for a few days; but you don’t come here to relax, and that’s just what we need. Besides, while being tied to the dock is convenient, especially with a dog, it’s not for us. It’s unnatural, noisy and there’s very little privacy. So we’ll be leaving in the morning for Desolation Sound where we hope to meet up with our friends, Jeff and Karry Bice, and their new (to them) Catalina-Morgan, Fantasy.
