Melanie Cove

We woke to a beautiful morning with blue skies and the warmth of sunshine.  But there were clouds moving in from the west, and it was short lived.

We didn't see the bear today, but it wasn't for a lack of trying.  Over the past three days, we'd simply been lucky ... we were in the right place at the right time.  But today was different and, with the many islands and islets surrounding the anchorage, it was like searching for a needle in a haystack.

We started off in the kayaks in the same place as yesterday, Cobblestone Island.  But he wasn't there.  David's back is bothering him, as is mine, and it was pretty chilly, so he floated back to Cambria while I circumnavigated Cobblestone Island with no result.  Cold, tired and a little wet, I gave up after a couple of hours and went  home as well to warm up.

I'm getting tired now and ready to move south.  The cold and lack of sunshine wear on my nerves while my thoughts keep returning to Wichita and my family, and that's a dangerous place to be.  I need to keep my head in this game before moving on to another – that's when mistakes happen.
